Art Legal Tip

As a young and not well known artist, it is a good idea to seek help from professionals in order to gain recognition, increase sales and get your art in the right places. Here is the first of a series of legal tips to make sure you cover your bum!

If you decide and can afford an agent, do remember to sign a contractual agreement. Though on the face of it, you have common interest, there are still inherent differences which need to be worked out before the relationship takes off.

Under UK law, to have an agreement, you don’t actually nee to have signed a formal paper. Whatever you discuss/agree upon may be taken as an agreement. So, to make sure that you are on the same page as your agent, make sure it is all clearly written and signed by both of you. This is a good start to a relationship, ensuring your interests are well defined.

3 Don’ts: Don’t sign blind, don’t signed if you are unclear, and do not sign if in doubt!
